Perkis writes, in his wonderful "Teaching Photography: Notes Assembled", that "Zoom lenses are the work of the devil" because a). "they are seldom sharp at the edges" and b). "more importantly they don't encourage a person to establish a real point of view". Whilst tremendous advances have indeed been made in zoom lens design the latter statement is for me the primary reason why I advocate shooting with prime lenses.
Actually "looking" and "seeing" an image before bringing a camera to the eye is a skill that when practiced can bring great rewards, and I must admit no small amount of pleasure.
