A few weeks ago I wrote about a process I had started work on to bring older transparencies back to life. Some photographers enquired as to how well this same procedure would work with B&W negatives. This week I finally found the time to dig out a film strip holder, from my Nikon Coolscan, that would facilitate this and gave it a bash.
Last night I photographed one negative, (FP4 processed in Diafine for anyone who is interested) and after processing it in Camera Raw inverted the file and made a few adjustments in CS5.
Initial thoughts? Well I do believe that it, the method of bringing B&W negatives in to a digital darkroom, has some merit. It is certainly very much faster than scanning and with practice will produce results that will rival what is possible with scanners. Yet another project for those, supposedly, quiet winter months.
